The Carnival in Putignano

At the end of February and beginning of March visitors to Puglia can witness the Carnival in Putignano.

  • Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 15:30
  • Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 15:30
  • Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 15:30
  • Shrove Tuesday, 5 March 2019 at 19:00

Entrance fee: Euro 12 per person for adults

For children between 0 and 10 years, admission is free. Children between 10 and 13 pay the reduced price of Euro 8.

The Carnival of Putignano is one of the oldest Carnival celebrations in Italy. Since 2006 the city has also held a summer edition, which if anything is more for the tourists. The mask feature of the event is called Farinella and owes its name to the dish of Putignano, a mix of roasted barley and chickpeas with the addition of salt.

The events include four parades: three on the Sunday’s leading up to Lent and one on the night of Shrove Tuesday. Artisan-crafted papier-mâché allegorical floats, choreographed bands of masked merrymakers stream through the streets to the sound of live music and cheering crowds.

Puglia Private Tour offers tailor-made guided tours, walking tours and excursions in a car with a local English speaking driver escort as well as tastings of local food and wine and accommodation in trulli, masserie and boutique hotels in Puglia.

What is the difference between a Driver and Guide ?

An English Speaking Driver Escort is not a guide. He will drive you during your journey, helping you to enjoy the experience of seeing the sights close-up. He will give you general information and take care of the practical details of your day itinerary by contacting your local guide, restaurant and escorting you safely to your hotel or cruise-ship after a day trip.

A local Guide is the acknowledged expert of the area you are visiting. He has an in depth knowledge of the subject and can illustrate archaeological areas, museums and other places of interest in your language and with great clarity. We strongly advise you to hire a local guide for a thematic tour.
