Itinerary

Day 1Bari

Arrival at the airport of Bari and transfer to the hotel. Free time for lunch. Guided tour with an English speaking tour guide to explore Bari’s picturesque old town visiting the Cathedral San Sabino, Bari’s Castle and the impressive Basilica di San Nicola. Opportunity to go shopping in Bari’s city centre. Free time for dinner and overnight stay in a beautiful boutique hotel in the old town of Bari.

Day 2Castel del Monte and Trani

Breakfast and private transfer to Castel del Monte a UNESCO-protected site and an important symbol of Puglia. This 13th century castle was one of many built by Roman emperor, Frederick II known as “stupor mundi”. Visit of a biological and biodynamic producer of olive oil, presentation of the production process and tasting of extra virgin olive oil, which will be enjoyed with a drink and other local treats. Wine tasting of some of Puglia’s best wines (such as Bombino Bianco, Nero di Troia and Moscato di Trani).

Trani is the highlight of the afternoon. Lombards, Normans, the Byzantine Empire, the Spanish and the French all left there traces behind in Trani. Your tour will include a visit of the port, Trani’s cathedral and castle and the old town with the synagogues dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when the Jewish community flourished in Trani. In the evening you will go back to Bari, where you will have some free time to have dinner and you will spend the night at the same boutique hotel in Bari that will be your base for this tour.

Day 3Altamura and Gioa del Colle with food and wine tasting

Breakfast and departure for Altamura, guided tour of its historic quarter with its Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, a church that was built by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and the Church S. Nicola dei Greci with its characteristic alleyways or “claustri”, distinctive to Altamura. They usually end in small courtyards.

Altamura is famous for its bread and of course you will visit a bakery and taste the Pane di Altamura DOP and other specialties such as the liquor “Don Peppe” and some sweet treats of the Monastero di Santa Chiara. In the afternoon you will visit Gioia del Colle. Legend has it, and authors of the time confirmed, that the favourite Frederick II’s mistress Bianca Lancia had been locked up here. Her ghost is said to haunt Gioa del Colle’s castle. After the guided tour you will enjoy a wine tasting in a wine cellar tasting some biologically produced wine. In the evening you will return to Bari and stay overnight in the same hotel.

Day 4Departure day

Optional guided tour of Polignano a Mare, Barletta, Conversano or Matera, transfer to the airport and departure.
