With its medieval structure, the historic center of Ceglie Messapica is an environmental-architectural gem protected since 1999. The urban design is dominated by the Ducale castle and the Collegiata church, with a thick maze of narrow alleyways and paved streets with typical “chianche” stones like in Piazza Vecchia, where whitewashed houses and their flowered balconies dot every corner.
Cast on the southern part of the Murge plateau, between Valle d’Itria and Salento, Ceglie Messapica is 35 kilometers west of Brindisi.
The Ducale Castle stands on a hill next to the Norman tower. At the behest of the Sanseverino family, in the Fifteenth century the manor became a stately edifice decorated with noble flags and frescoes.
Across the historic center, the architecture of Palazzi unveils Ceglie’s aristocratic soul: the 18th century Palazzo Allegretti, overlooking Piazza Vecchia, is home to the Emilio Notte Art Gallery and the municipal library; Palazzo Epifani, close to the castle, or Palazzo Vitale with its typical bossage walls.
Consecrated to the Assunta, the Collegiata Church was built on the ruins of an old acropolis, before being turned into a Baroque church during the 18th century. Revealing its Messapian origins, Ceglie is surrounded by terraces dotted with trulli and dry stone walls, while amazing stalactites and stalagmites shape the nearby Montevicoli Grottos.A place of art and exquisite food & wine, Ceglie is also famous for its delicious Cegliese biscotto.
The duration of every half day tour is 4 hours. Please let us know, if you are especially interested in food and wine, history, art, culture or architecture.
