Your tour guide will lead you to the Murat district in Bari and also to the UNESCO listed world heritage site Castel del Monte, to the town Andria, that was always loyal to Frederick II, who left his mark on Puglia by building many castles. Your visits of Trani with its historical centre and its Cathedral next to the sea, the cave city Matera (Unesco world heritage) and Alberobello with its round whitewashed stone houses with conical roofs (the trulli, another UNESCO world heritage site) will make your holiday perfect.

Accommodation: You will spend the first three nights of your stay in a splendid historical building, al palazzo that was transformed into a hotel (in the historical city center of Bari), the fourth night will be spent in a hotel in the cave city Matera in order to be able to experience the magic of this city and the last night will be spent in a masseria (a chic and elegant Puglian Manor Estate transformed into a hotel).

What's the difference between a driver and a guide?

This tour is planned with a driver and a guide.

An English Speaking Driver is not a guide. He will drive you during your journey, helping you to enjoy the experience of seeing the sights close-up. He will give you general information and take care of the practical details of your day itinerary by contacting your local guide, restaurant and escorting you safely to your hotel or cruise-ship after a day trip.

A local Guide is the acknowledged expert of the area you are visiting. He has an in depth knowledge of the subject and can illustrate archaeological areas, museums and other places of interest in your language and with great clarity. We strongly advise you to hire a local guide for a thematic tour.

Itinerary

Day 1

After your arrival in Bari, a private transfer will take you to your hotel. The first highlight of this itinerary will be a sightseeing tour of Bari. You will stroll through the labyrintical streets of Bari’s picturesque historical center and visit the Cathedral San Sabino, the Swabian Castle and the impressive Basilica di San Nicola (welcoming in a cosmopolitan way Christians belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church as well as those belonging to the Roman Catholic Church). After a short break for refreshments (not included in the price) your tour continues to the harbour and to the fishermen, you will walk along the seafront that is dominated by Fascist architechture. Afterwards you will discover the beauty of the Art Nouveau architecture in the Murat district. Puglia was ruled by the French at the beginning of the 19th century, when those beautiful buildings were built. This part of the city is also a great place for shopping. Free time for dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2Trani and Castel del Monte

After breakfast you will go to Trani (with its beautiful Romanesque cathedral). It is situated on a raised open site near the sea. You will also visit the Swabian castle and the marina with the picturesque fishing boats, the historical center with its two synagogues. They were built in the 11th and 12th century by the flourishing Jewish community of Trani. Free time for lunch. We will be happy to recommend a typical restaurant. The afternoon will be spent discovering Castel del Monte, the UNESCO cultural heritage. At the end you will visit Andria, a city that is particularly closely connected to the Emperor and to the Teutonic Chevaliers. Return to Bari in the evening, free time for dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 3Matera

After breakfast your driver will take you to Matera, the cave city. It is one of the UNESCO heritage sites and was described as the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem”. Free time for dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Matera.

Day 4Alberobello

For the fourth day there is another highlight planned: A visit of the UNESCO listed city Alberobello. known for its stonehouses with conical roofes called trulli that will be the third UNESCO heritage site of this tour. In the evening you will move to another hotel. This one is situated in the Puglian countryside. It is a historical building, a former Manor Estate and it was refurbished and transformed into a wonderful hotel. It is situated in the Itria Valley. Here you have the possibility to visit the wine shop Tholos for a wine tasting (optional, on request). Free time for dinner and overnight stay at the hotel. In the afternoon you will go to a splendid masseria (Puglian Manor Estate in the beautiful Puglian countryside). You can spend the afternoon at the masseria and relax. For those, who enjoy a more active holiday, we offer optional excursions to Locorotondo. You will have dinner at the masseria and spend the night in this beautiful masseria hotel.

Day 5

Depending on your departure time and your interests you can either spend the day relaxing or you can book another one of our guided excursions. We recommend: the archeological site in Egnazia, the “white city” Ostuni, the baroque city Martina Franca, etc.) … or you could choose a wellness day at the masseria or go and spend some time on one of Puglia’s beaches. On the way to the airport we can stop and enjoy a short break at Polignano a Mare (and enjoy the stunning view of the sea).
