Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Bari

Day 1
Upon your arrival at the airport of Bari a private transfer will take you to the hotel In Matera.
You will have some free time for lunch. We would be happy to recommend a restaurant for you.
You pay for lunch à la carte at the restaurant. In the afternoon a private transfer will take you to Altamura for a visit of the old town with its cathedral and the church San Nicola dei Greci, one of the few sacral buildings commissioned by Emperor Frederick II. Altamura is also famous for its courtyards, the characteristic “claustri” (shared by more than one house). A delicious Puglian bread is made in Altamura and once you are here, you will have the possibility of tasting a fresh piece of Pane di Altamura DOP bread and we shall try some other Puglian delicacies as well during our visit at a local bakery. At the end of our visit in Altamura we shall drink a glass of “Don Peppe” (typical nut liquor of Altamura) and enjoy one of the sweet pastries prepared using the traditional recipes of Saint Clare’s Monastery. In the evening a private transfer will take you back to your Hotel , where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 2Matera

After breakfast in the hotel, you will explore Matera with your tour guide. You will experience the special light in Matera soon after sunrise, you will visit the Medieval part of the city with its Catheral. (The Cathedral is currently being renovated Piazza Sedile, the baroque part of Matera called Piano and its extensive and ancient cave dwellings, known as sassi (in Matera’s districts Caveoso and Barisano). Matera is on the Unesco cultural world heritage list because of these unique sassi, because they are “the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodite settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem” . The century old churches are worth a visita s well and believe us, this is a fairytale setting for a living crib (in Italian: presepe
vivente). In 2010, Matera’s living crib made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, because it had more participants in costumes than any other living crib. Matera is a natural movie set and many movies were shot here. The visit will take one full day and you will have lunch à la carte in one of Matera’s restaurants (and you pay directly at the restaurant). In the evening you will return to the hotel and spend the night there.

Day 3Alberobello, locorotondo

After breakfast a private transfer will take you to the Itria Valley with its trulli. One of the highlights will be a guided tour of Alberobello (another town on the Unesco Cultural heritage site). Your guide will show you the beauty of Monti and Aia Piccola, the part of Alberobello, where you can find 1100 trulli houses, one next to the other. The atmosphere at Christmas time will remind you of a fairytale due to the presence of the national exhibition of Christmas Cribs in the local Museum “Museo del Territorio Casa Pezzolla”.
After your visit of Alberobello you will visit Locorotondo, a hilltop town with a labyrinth of white washed buildings built along quiet streets. You will have lunch in a restaurant that we can recommend and after your visit you will check in at a hotel in Locorotondo. Then you will have some free time for dinner in a restaurant that we can recommend and you will spend the night in the hotel 4 stars in Locorotondo.

Day 4Polignano and departure

Depending on your flight schedule, a private transfer will take you to the airport after breakfast or, if you still have some time, you could book a full-day or a half-day excursion to Martina Franca or to Ceglie Messapica or Polignano we could organize a visit of a cheesemaker and tasting of Puglian specialites.
