This pretty seaside town is squashed on the edge of a short stretch of cliffs 20 minutes’ drive south of Bari. The location is pretty enough, but the main reason to come here is for the fabulous seafood.
When in Polignano a Mare you should also taste the “caffè speciale”. Mario Campanello, known as the “Super Mago del Gelato” (The Ice Cream Man) created the original “caffè speciale”, made with espresso coffee, lemon peel, whipped cream and sweet almonds liqueur.

Every aspect of the creation process is manual and, therefore, unique. The technique consists in illuminating a glass mosaic, and creating individual objects of light. His lamp sculptures are born on a spectacular terrace on a seaside cliff overlooking the Lama Monachile, used as a laboratory and atelier. Here, art is alive and continues to change, as does the nature that creates the setting for Peppino‘s art.

Poligano is the birthplace of the renowned singer Domenico Modugno, who became famous for his song Nel blu dipinto di blu (“In the Sky, Painted Blue”). The fascinating historical centre reveals traces of its Arab, Byzantine, Spanish and Norman past, including the remains of the four watchtowers that once guarded the ancient town.
Head through the Arco della Porta (the Door Arch), once the town’s only entrance, and you’ll find yourself in the magical centre, home to the 13th-century Mother Church dedicated to the Assumption. Another must-see is the town’s former slaughterhouse, which has been renovated and today houses the Pino Pascali Museum Foundation and its collection of works by Puglia’s renowned artist and sculptor. When in Polignano, you should drink the city’s special coffee made from whipped cream, coffee, lemon peel and sweet almond.
